! Weapon !! Role according to the manual
|-
| Turbolaser guns || On some [[Capital ships|capital ships]], these are especially effective versus other capital ships.<ref name="manual-p137" />
|-
| Ion cannons || Effective on capital ship shields; they also knock out systems like engines and gun recharge.<ref name="manual-p137" />

== Ship ratings and placement ==
Ships do not all carry every weapon type. A ship's encyclopedia entry and Status window list which weapons it has, each with a number for its strength that can be used to compare ships.<ref name="manual-p138" /> The entry also gives where each weapon is mounted (fore, aft, starboard or port), and in battle each ship moves automatically to bring its weapons to bear best.<ref name="manual-p138" /> The Status window shows weapons arc ratings for turbolasers, ion cannons and laser cannons at each of those four stations.<ref name="manual-p115" /> Weapon recharge is among the ship systems whose current level and capacity the Status window reports.<ref name="manual-p114" />

A tractor beam lets a ship pin down an enemy vessel, and a gravity well generator blocks opposing ships from withdrawing.<ref name="manual-p137" />
