RebEd (the Rebellion Editor, also written RebED) is a Windows editor for Star Wars: Rebellion, written by a team called Revolution. It lets players change unit stats and pictures with RebEd cards, edit other images stored in the game's DLLs through DLLEntries.txt, and save whole sets of changes as a total conversion.[1]

History

According to the SWRebellion download page, Revolution developed RebEd around 1999–2001, shortly after the game's release. Some members of the team were among the founders of the SWRebellion community, including Skippy and Sesswanna. The team disappeared around 2000–2001, and the source code was lost, so the editor can no longer be updated. The original Windows 98-era files still work on Windows 10/11 and with the Steam, GOG and Origin releases of the game.[2] A 2001 staff list names Condar as a "Rebellion Editor programmer".[3]

The last version is 0.26. In 2001 the SWRebellion file archive offered it as rebed_setup.zip (dated 27 July 1999), alongside a RebED help file, a card viewer and Resource Explorer.[1][4]

Features

  • Cards for changing a unit's stats and pictures – see RebEd cards.[1]
  • A DLL entries modifier for changing more pictures inside the game's DLL files – see DLLEntries.txt.[1]
  • A settings loader ("Save Settings" / "Load Settings") that stores all changes in a single .REB file, which is how total conversions are distributed.[1][5]

Requirements and limits

  • Star Wars: Rebellion must be installed as a full install to edit everything. The 2001 FAQ mentions the 155 MB full-install option, or RebEd's own Partial Installer to copy files from the CD to the hard disk.[1][5]
  • RebEd replaces existing units; it cannot add new ones, which would need the game itself to be reprogrammed.[5]
  • The 2001 FAQ advises keeping base stat values under 255, notes that a maintenance cost of 0 makes a unit unbuildable, and lists a known bug where "Restore All" leaves wrong names.[5]
  • A "latest version" warning when loading a total conversion usually means a missing or wrong DLLEntries.txt.[5]

SWRE

Before RebEd, the main editor was the Star Wars Rebellion Editor (SWRE), a DOS program by Mach Demon. RebEd replaced it, offering all of SWRE's features in an easier-to-use Windows program.[1] It is not the same program as the modern Star Wars Rebellion Editor (.NET).

Support

Limited help is available in the #game-support channel of the SWRebellion Discord, but because the source code is lost the community cannot patch or improve RebEd.[2]
