SWRebellion (also SWR, SWRebellion.com and SWRebellion.net) is a fan community dedicated to Star Wars: Rebellion and its editor, RebEd.[1] It has existed in one form or another since 1999, and by its own description it has been the main site for the game for most of that time.[2]

History

starwarsrebellion.com (1998–1999)

A December 1999 news post says StarWarsRebellion.com started in January 1998 and names Bigguy219 ("Admiral Rodney") as its founder.[3] In early 1999 the site went about a month without updates because only the founder could reach its server; when it returned in April 1999, DHanlon reported that several exclusive files, including the Warlords total conversion and a unit library, had been lost.[4] That spring the staff list included DHanlon, Danny Poo, General Solo and Jedi Mess, with contributors such as Eville Jedi and Sesswanna.[4]

By late 1999 the site ran as "The Rebellion News Center", hosting the RebED Card Guild and a forum, and Evaders99 reported an average of 178 visits a day.[3]

swrebellion.net (2000–2001)

The community moved to the swrebellion.net domain. A June 2001 staff page lists:[5]

  • EW – webmaster, card and TC maker
  • Skippy – webmaster and domain owner
  • Condar – webmaster and Rebellion Editor programmer
  • Evaders99 – webmaster
  • Eville Jedi – webmaster, graphics and 3D models
  • Zeblork – webmaster and card compiler
  • Webspider – webmaster, RebED Card Guild
  • Talon "NemesiS" Karrde – webmaster, Nar Shaddaa site

The site offered news, files, chat, a RebED forum, cards, TCs, an FAQ and hosting for related fan sites.[6] In September 2001 news was posted by Stratus and Evaders99, and the site reported more than 200 visitors a day.[7]

SWRebellion Network (2005–2014)

The Star Wars Rebellion Network was founded in 2005 as part of the main site. In 2012 it reported over 5,000 members and about five million hits a month, and said its database had tracked more than ten million page visits since August 2002.[2] The network included:[2]

  • Star Wars Community – In Character (SWCIC), a role-playing community, independent since November 2005;
  • Star Wars: Warlords, a mod for Homeworld 2;
  • Imperial Assault, total conversions for Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour and Empire at War;
  • the GUTR project (Thrawn's Revenge for Empire at War and Galactic Uprising for Command & Conquer 3);
  • the Gamers Revolution Forum (formerly Petroglyph Fan Forums) and Evaders Squadron Coding.

The network also offered free hosting for Star Wars sites, a chatroom, a gallery and a Folding@home team.[2]

Since 2014

In October 2014 the site went read-only after a server transfer, and the administrators announced the Star Wars Gamers Association; forum posting was restored in April 2015.[8] In September 2018 the community opened an official Discord server, which had more than 700 active users by April 2020.[9] In March 2021 the site announced "The Next Chapter": because its early-2000s software had suffered attacks and database problems, it would move to Invision Community, funded by a community fundraiser.[9]

Today swrebellion.net hosts the forums, downloads such as the Rebellion Fix and RebEd, and news such as the Rebellion 2 alpha.[1]
