The RebEd FAQ (2001) is the question-and-answer page that the SWRebellion community kept for RebEd users, as archived on 16 June 2001. Its sections are Cards, TCs, DLL Entries, Editing, Problems and a list of picture resources.[1] The basics of cards and total conversions are covered in RebEd cards and Total conversion; this article collects the other answers.

Swapping pictures

The FAQ says that picture changes through the DLL resource explorer are hard, and that DLLEntries.txt simply lists the DLL file and number of each picture. To exchange the pictures of two units, it describes a simpler route: save the picture from the encyclopedia entry of unit A, save the picture of unit B, load A's picture into B's entry, then load B's picture into A's.[1]

Editing limits

  • Maximum values. The exact maximum is not known. If a value is set too high, every mission that uses that statistic fails as if the value were zero, and the page recommends keeping base values under 255.[1]
  • Maintenance cost. A maintenance cost of zero makes the game treat the item as unbuildable.[1]
  • Recharge rate. The rate works as energy gained per second, so a higher number makes a ship fire faster, the opposite of how hyperspace values behave.[1]
  • Force ranks. The FAQ gives these cut-offs: Novice 11–19, Trainee 20–79, Jedi Student 90–99, Jedi Knight 100–119, Jedi Master 120 and up. The printed list has no entry for 80–89 (Jedi Student starts at 90), a gap the tips page does not share. The official site's tips page gives other thresholds; see Gameplay tips on Force growth and game events.[1]
  • Cutscenes. They can be viewed, converted or rebuilt with the Smacker tools. Replacing cutscenes requires copying the whole game CD to the hard disk and using a no-CD crack.[1]

Problems and answers

  • A complaint that a full install is needed, even after RebEd was downloaded in full, means the game itself needs a full install (the 155 MB option), or its files must be moved from CD to hard disk with RebEd's Partial Installer.[1]
  • The "latest version" message when loading a total conversion points to a missing or wrong DLLEntries.txt; the page names 0.26 as the latest RebEd.[1]
  • Crashes should be reported on the forum with the error message, the exact steps, the game's language version, a repeatable case and the c:\error.log file.[1]
  • Cards that will not load were blamed on a known Netscape download problem that corrupted files; the page suggests downloading with Internet Explorer.[1]
  • Custom settings can be used in multiplayer, but both players must use the same settings or crashes are likely.[1]
  • After "Restore All", some unit names may display incorrectly. This is a known bug; moving the "Encyc DLLs" to the hard disk in the Partial Installer restores the encyclopedia entries and names.[1]

Picture resources

The last section lists websites that card makers used as picture sources: model, news, fan art, comic, book-cover and general science-fiction picture sites. It calls its own list extremely out of date and invites readers to send additions.[1]
