Command ranks are the three positions a character can hold to lead military units in Star Wars: Rebellion: Admiral, General and Commander.[1]

Assigning a rank

A ranked character can lead every regiment on a system or fleet, every ship in a fleet, or every fighter squadron attached to a system or fleet.[1] Many characters have the potential for command, but the rank must be assigned explicitly before it has any effect.[2] The Status window shows a character's potential rank. To make the character command, the player right-clicks the character, chooses Command and then picks the rank.[3] A character on a system is put in command of land-based regiments or fighters in the same way.[4] The manual notes that fleets do not require personnel, but perform much better under competent commanders.[5]

The three ranks

Admiral
Quickens the reactions of the fleet's ships in tactical play. If a battle involves several fleets, only the strongest of their admirals counts. Admirals also amplify bombardment by ships, make capital ships handle better, and help stop enemy missions.[1]
General
Boosts trooper regiments, whether they assault from a fleet or defend a system, and amplifies defensive batteries. According to the manual, a general adds nothing in tactical combat.[1]
Commander
Makes fighters more effective and more agile during tactical play. A commander may also be given the fighters defending a system.[1][6]

Effect of skills

A higher leadership rating gives a greater enhancement to the regiments or fighters under the character.[4] All three ranks greatly improve the ability of their units to detect enemy missions, and once a mission is detected, to capture or kill its members. The detection strength depends on the commander's espionage rating and the capture-or-kill strength depends on the combat rating; higher is better in both cases.[6] For any system the player wishes to defend, the manual advises appointing a general or commander there.[6] See Character skills and Decoys and detectors.

Loyalty

Characters in command roles do not betray the player, even with low loyalty (see Traitors).[7]

Game data

In the vanilla v1.02 data for the six Major characters, the CanBeAdmiral, CanBeCommander and CanBeGeneral flags are all set for Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Darth Vader, and all clear for Mon Mothma, Leia Organa and Emperor Palpatine.[8]
