History
Ilum kept its historic importance as a sacred site for building lightsabers. The planet is abundant in kyber crystals, the chief ingredient in powering a lightsaber, and Jedi had long come there to make their own weapons. When the Galactic Empire rose and the Jedi Order was destroyed, though, Ilum's importance faded. The Empire mined its resources and tried to use kyber crystals for several purposes, superweapons among them. With the Galactic Civil War still dragging on, Ilum stayed an important though disputed supply of these rare and potent crystals.[1]
