Starwarsrebellion.com news of 1999
The starwarsrebellion.com news of 1999 is the run of site news posts that records how the early Star Wars: Rebellion fan site changed hands and nearly lost its hosting in late 1999. It is one of the pages kept in the archive of the SWRebellion community's history. Posts are signed by community handles and dated as printed.[1]
Changing staff (September 1999)
A post of 11 September 1999 says that General Solo and DHanlon had handed the site over to Evaders99 and Eville Jedi, though both might still contribute. The new webmasters planned to change the color scheme, and one was working on a card catalog in ASP. The same post mentions a 3D model editor being developed by Admiral Screed (later using the name Darth Dorsch), who wanted help from C++ programmers, and an invitation to RebED experts to join a RebED Help Team.[1]
Contests and card news (September to November 1999)
- 18 September 1999: the Ultimate Card Contest, judged on picture, stats and gameplay, was announced as a way for new card makers to build a reputation.[1]
- 14 October 1999: Evaders99 started a RebED Card Hunt; by 3 November 1999 he called it a fluke and stopped it.[1]
- 3 November 1999: Zeblork had uploaded his card site to the main site and was handling cards and a new forum, with the RebED Card Guild, the poster thought, also going to follow. Strategy sites were loaded by 24 November, in a new two-part menu.[1]
Hosting crisis (December 1999)
On 15 December 1999 the site reported 178 hits a day on average, restored the RebED Card Guild with Zeblork (RCU) and Skippy and EW (Guild), and added an FAQ. It said the domain's future was unclear because the original owners could not be reached, and that StarWarsRebellion.com had started in January 1998.[1] On 16 December 1999 Eville Jedi wrote that, although he had not spoken to him directly, the founder, Bigguy219, had reportedly decided to drop the community within two weeks, saying it was using his web space without permission. The post notes that domain names cost at least $50 a year and hosting can cost over $100, lists the options (a free host or a major Star Wars site) and says the whole site had been backed up locally, with a fallback copy planned on a free host.[1]
New domain (January 2000)
The newest post is dated 1.8.99 on the page but sits above the December 1999 entries, so it was probably written in January 2000. It says Skippy and EW had bought a new domain name, that the Guild would be folded into the site's interface, and that a news system like that of the Combine site (the Star Wars Combine role-playing game site mentioned on 14 September) would be built.[1] The 12 October 1999 main page of the old site shows the RebED card total and Card Guild described in RebEd cards.[2]
